Abstract

These texts are from the symposium “Representations on ethnic and gender diversity in nation projects in the Americas” that took place within the framework of the V Congress of the Latin American Anthropology Association
and the XVI Anthropology Conference in Colombia (Bogotá, Colombia, June 2017). On that occasion, researchers from Mexican, Argentinean and Brazilian universities gathered to investigate how ethnic, nationality and gender diversity issues have been represented, included or excluded in the national narratives of the continent. The starting concept was that each nation, throughout its construction process, created its own ways of conceiving diversity. Although
some similarities can be found in the way in which the past and present of diverse ethnic groups have been represented, each case presents its own specific particularities. We were interested in shedding light on the different ways in which such diversities have been represented within the framework of the projects of
the nation of the Americas from the nineteenth century up to the present time.
