Abstract
Following the death of Pope Francis, his unique leadership of the Vatican was marked by his stances on controversial issues that the Church had previously avoided, but which have been of particular public interest in the 21st century, such as social justice. In this context, it is important to understand the motivations behind his main political actions during his pontificate. To this end, on April 10, 2025, we interviewed one of Mexico's leading researchers on religion: Dr. Elio Masferrer Kan, Professor Emeritus at the National School of Anthropology and History and a PhD in Anthropology. His main lines of research are religion and politics, contemporary religious systems, symbolic systems, and the anthropology of religions. He is also the editor of the biannual journal Religiones Latinoamericanas and the weekly Boletín Sociopolítica Religiosa.
